Meet Trailblazer Award Winner Dave Walker

Knowing that I have played a role in making others feel seen, valued and connected at Northwestern means everything to me.”

Dave Walker
2025 I'm First: Trailblazer Award Winner

Northwestern proudly recognized third-year David "Dave" Walker with the annual I’m First: Trailblazer Award for his dedication to mentorship, leadership, and advocacy. This honor, presented by Student Enrichment Services at the I’m First Awards, recognizes a first-generation student leader who actively contributes to their community.

When I first arrived at Northwestern, I knew I wanted to be involved in student life in a way that would make a real impact,” said Walker, a Communication Sciences and Disorders major.

Drawing from his previous experiences working with student councils and mentoring high school students in Chicago, Walker sought opportunities to create similar spaces of support on campus. His commitment to fostering a sense of belonging for other students led him to two organizations that would shape his experience at Northwestern: The and the (BMP).

Walker initially joined the North Area Council as a general member and the BMP as a second year student. Over time, his passion and leadership propelled him to take on bigger roles and greater responsibilities. Now, he serves as vice president of programming for the North Area Council and executive coordinator for BMP, roles that allow him to spearhead initiatives, organize events and cultivate meaningful connections among students.

Through his leadership, Walker has witnessed firsthand the power of community.

“Some of my favorite moments are the ones where I get to witness students feeling truly ‘at home,’” Walker said. “Whether it’s seeing them laugh and connect at an event, watching someone step into a leadership role with confidence, or even having late-night conversations with our students remind me why our spaces matter.”

Walker credits much of his success to the mentors who guided him early in his Northwestern journey.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the mentorship and guidance of students who came before me,” he said.

Walker would like to acknowledge the influence of three individuals who helped him feel “big in a very small space”: Chloe Porter, Ambar Guzman and Jayden McCarrell, all who graduated from Northwestern in 2024 and were members of the BMP executive board. He would like to thank them for giving him encouragement, a sense of belonging and advice on how to navigate Northwestern as a black student.

“Their support continues to inspire me to pay it forward and offer the same type of guidance to others,” he said.

Now, as a mentor himself, Walker is committed to doing just that. His leadership in BMP ensures that younger students feel seen, heard and empowered to thrive at Northwestern. His advice to fellow first-generation students? “Find your home away from home.”

Receiving the I’m First: Trailblazer Award is a meaningful milestone for Walker, but he sees it as a collective victory rather than a personal achievement.

“It's more than just an individual achievement. I see it as a reflection of the impact that community, mentorship and support can have on a student’s journey,” he said. “I dedicate this award not just to myself, but to the many students I’ve had the privilege of supporting and uplifting.”

Walker’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience and leadership that first-generation students bring to Northwestern. As he continues to inspire and guide others, his legacy as a trailblazer is sure to leave a lasting impact.

“Knowing that I have played a role in making others feel seen, valued and connected at Northwestern means everything to me,” he said.
